• Community Risers!

As we enter this new year, we are confronting many of the same challenges we faced in the year past--and we continue to hold a vision of a better world that works for all of its inhabitants. On a local level, that vision includes meeting the needs of those who are currently unhoused and/or facing food insecurity; on a state level, that vision includes protection of our immigrant neighbors and a fairer distribution of wealth; on a national level, that vision includes fair treatment of immigrants and care for our environment--as well as a government that respects other nations and the international rule of law. And, of course, much much more! Below is a listing of events and activities where each of us can work toward that vision. Lots of ways to engage!

    Decline to Sign Dangerous Initiatives

    • There have been multiple MAGA “super-signer” events on school grounds around WA pushing IL26-01 and IL26-638 (explained below). These initiatives are written in intentionally confusing ways that have allowed signature gatherers to gain 60,000 signatures by Democrats and Independents. Make sure to tell all your friends and family the truth about these initiatives and ask them to decline to sign.

      • IL26-001: This initiative harms vulnerable children by forcing schools to out children to their parents, makes it impossible for students to receive confidential mental health care, and disrupts classrooms by allowing parents to opt children out of any instruction that includes topics prohibited by “the child's family beliefs, morality, religion, or political affiliations”.

      • IL26-638: This initiative would force invasive physical exams of "reproductive organs" on all girls as young as 11 for them to play sports, putting them at risk of sexual abuse, violating their privacy, and discouraging girls from the benefits of being on a team. Boys would be exempt. Washington State already has policies in place for

Get Involved with Grow It Forward Restoration

    • Grow It Forward Restoration is a group of gardeners who organize people to set up micro-nurseries in their yards. Each micro-nursery grows 100 native tree and shrub seedlings which will be used to restore critical habitats in the PNW. To host a micro-nursery you will need to devote 16 square feet of space in your yard for the seedlings, plant the seedlings within two days of getting them, and commit to hosting the seedlings for 2 ½ years until they are large enough to be replanted. A donation is recommended to recoup the cost of the growing materials. More information here.

      • If you would like to host a micro-nursery but have concerns about your ability to plant the seedlings please respond to this email, as there are Community Risers who would love to help.
